Immerse yourself in the rich sights, sounds and smells of Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa's oldest and best preserved tropical mountain forests. The majestic trees form a green cathedral, below which hundreds of orchid and bird species abound. Experience Chimpanzee tracking,  a canopy walk offering a bird's eye view over the misty forest, or feel refreshed by a trek to Kamiranzovu Waterfall.

Primate Tracking

Thirteen species of primates, including Chimpanzees, Colobus, and the rare L’Hoest Monkey, can be observed in Nyungwe National Park. Chimpanzee tracking begins at 5:30am. Visitors walk several hours until they reach the Chimpanzees’ location, at which point they are allowed to observe them for a maximum of one hour.

Hiking

Hiking along Nyungwe’s fifteen, mountainous yet well maintained trails offers an excellent opportunity for birdwatching, enjoying the Canopy walkway, or visiting one of the Parks several waterfalls. In addition, the trails bring Nyungwe’s summits within reach, with a panoramic view of Lake Kivu as a reward.

Camping

Nyungwe’s Uwinka campsite offers a  beautiful view from its vantage point on a hill in the midst of the tropical rainforest. It is conveniently next to the start of the trail for those planning to go trekking early in the morning.

Community Tours

Get a taste of Rwanda by visiting a tea plantation and beekeeping initiatives or participating in the production of traditional banana or sorghum beer while supporting communities surrounding Nyungwe Forest.

Birdwatching

Nyungwe National Park is renowned for its diversity of birds. Among the more than 300 species which inhabit the Park, several are unique to the region. Specialist bird guides can be booked in advance.
